You’ve got to at least feel somewhat sorry for Harford County Delegate Mary Dulaney James. At least a little bit, and at present, anyway. Dulaney James, a Democrat, is currently the Delegate for District 34A, representing Cecil and Harford Counties. But, she’s also now running for the State Senate Seat in the newly redistricted Senate District 34 – which wipes out Cecil County from her prospective constituents and voters.
So, why do I say she is deserving of our pity?
Because she’s running against everyone’s “favorite” cranky, if not psychotic, uncle in the primary, the one and only Art Helton.
Art Helton, apparently at one time a former State Senator, himself, has more or less become the Harford County localized version for the Democrats of what Ross Pierpont had become for the GOP some years ago – running for a different office every damned election cycle with no real of hope of getting elected. The difference is, as far as I can tell, that Pierpont was a gentleman…whereas Helton is a crank. Who, apparently, still thinks he’s a Senator – at least he does, judging from this piece of campaign propaganda:
(He Calls Himself a Senator, therefore he MUST be a Senator. Right?)
And, upon seeing that he still calls himself a “Senator,” I contacted the real (and present) Senator from up yonder, the Honorable Nancy Jacobs, who is – alas – retiring from her Senate Seat at the end of her current term and asked her what she thought of Helton’s hyperbole.
Referring to “Senator” Helton’s calling himself a “Senator” as being “typical Art Helton BS,” Jacobs took some pity on him and told me, “He hasn’t been in the Senate since the early 1980’s. We need to forgive him – after all he is quite elderly and his memory is failing.”
In the end, she added that Helton, “also did it to me when he ran against me twice.
And, now he’s going after Mary Dulaney James via trying to convince folks in District 34 that he’s already their Senator.
Not to worry, though – as I feel pretty safe in betting that Dulaney James will still beat that crank silly come this primary. She is, after all, decidedly very bright and has a very good pedigree, being the progeny of the late Senator William S. James.
Speaking of someone who’s not prematurely calling himself “Senator”…
There is Bob Cassilly, the Republican running for the same Senate seat that is being vacated by Senator Jacobs and for which Dulaney James and Not-Senator-Helton are vying.
Cassilly, The former Mayor of Bel Air and a former Commissioner who is now a Harford County Councilmember was feted at a District 34 Senate Bull Roast earlier today and was introduced at said event by Nancy Jacobs, who had the following to say in a Facebook Post about him and his run for the State Senate:
“I just finished introducing Bob Cassilly, the next Senator from District 34. When I introduced Bob on the Senate floor last week, Mike Miller told the Senate how impressed he is with Bob’s resume. He had obviously done his homework on Bob. Bob will make a great Senator. I will rest better knowing he will be taking my place.”
That’s great! But, why would Mike Miller have already done so much homework on Bob Cassilly? Because Mike Miller wants desperately for Mary Dulaney James to get elected Senator in District 34, that’s why. He’s looking for info on Cassilly for the purpose of picking him apart. I expect the Senate President to dump a lot of money into that race.
Post primary, anyway. Once Dulaney James dispatches “Senator” Art Helton to run another year for another office.
Maybe we shouldn’t feel sorry for Mary Dulaney James at present. Not in the least…
Goodbye to Senator Nancy Jacobs who’s getting ready to wrap up her final session in Annapolis. Whether or not everyone always agreed with her, there was never any doubt where she stood. I’m going to miss knowing she was down there.
