I haven’t written in a while (been busy doing edits on my manuscript for my second book, “Death, March.”) and, truth be told, I wasn’t sure when I was going to write a blog post again.
But, here I am writing now – a few days after New Jersey Governor (and head of the Republican Governors Association) Chris Christie visits Maryland (and raises a boatload of money for) on behalf of GOP Gubernatorial Hopeful, Larry Hogan…and on a day in which, I’m sure, Maryland’s Democrat LG and Gubernatorial candidate, Anthony Brown, remains as brain dead as ever…
So, what pulled me from my blog slumbers? Nope, it wasn’t even Maryland’s write-in candidate for Governor, Brian Vaeth, who’d first posted on Facebook – and quickly removed his posted promise to “execute” a certain prominent Marylander. Good call on the removal there, Brian!
Nope…what prompted me to write a blog post was not for me to either crap on anybody or even slap someone down a bit. What prompted me to write this is that two of Maryland’s best and brightest GOP volunteers are soon to be departing the once “free state” for the greener pastures of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
Yes, the husband and wife team of Joan and Herman “Woody” Wood are leaving us – and we are all the poorer for it.
I attended a surprise “Bon Voyage” party for Joan and Woody held last night at the GOP Victory Center in Towson. Well, me and a ton of other people did, anyway.
The surprise party was, as far as I know, put together by Activist and Central Committee Elect Member Kathy Smero with the help of, in Ms. Smero’s words (MDGOP National Committeewoman) Nicolee Ambrose, Jane Roger, Maria Pycha, Sam Kahl, Rose Long, Lois Long Temple, and Kristin Long. Excellent job on behalf of two excellent people!
In addition, the party also featured a veritable “Who’s Who” of Baltimore County and (other areas, as well) politicos and activists and fans of Joan and Woody. A number of elected officials, likewise, gave small presentations and awards to Joan and Woody. Elected Officials present included, Senator Nancy Jacobs, Delegates, Sue Auman, JB Jennings, John Cluster, Joe Boteler, Bill Frank, Kathy Szeliga – and whoever I’m sure that I missed!
Among others, candidates for office included Gordon Bull, Christian Miele Bob Long, Dr. Tim Robinson – and whoever else I’m sure I missed! And, there was cake….
(Created by my Swedish Daughter, the one and only and fabulous Kiara Berg. And, every bit of it is edible… Ki’s Kakes – she can do this for all occasions.)
So, after chatting for a bit with Senator Jacobs and Delegates, Cluster and Jennings and MDGOP Executive Director Joe Cluster, I went to the guests of honor – Joan and Woody Wood – and thanked them for all that they’d done. But mainly, being the selfish and greedy bastard that I am, I went to just take a moment to bask in the warmth of their magic.
Joan’s probably rolling her eyes right now, having just read that last line. But, I meant it Joan. You and Woody are both magic, and you both will be so greatly missed it’s pretty much impossible to put it into words.
I can’t recall at present who said it – but last night someone stated that “Maryland’s loss is South Carolina’s gain.”
Ain’t that the truth.
