It’s not as if Larry Hogan appointed Ted Bundy to be in charge of Community Outreach or anything…
But, judging from some of the emails and other messages I received in the wake of Mark Newgent, late of Red Maryland, being tabbed by Larry Hogan to be his Deputy Policy Director, you’d have thought so.
And, despite the fact that what I’m about to say here will likely piss off a number of my friends, I’m going to say it anyway: I like Mark Newgent.
Yeah, yeah, yeah – I know, he wrote for Red Maryland and, while writing for Red Maryland, he also did research for the Hogan campaign last year. Big deal. He did the research and he did it well enough, apparently, to be named to a top tier spot in the incoming Hogan Administration. Good for him. Hell, I even congratulated Mark for getting named to the positon of Deputy Policy Director on his Facebook page yesterday. More than that, I believe he’s pretty much a damned perfect fit – and I think he’ll do very well with the position.
Now, a number of the people who contacted me were, I’m sure, expecting me to take off on Hogan for appointing Newgent and to again take off on Newgent. I say “again,” because I’ve tagged both gentlemen in print in the past.
As concerns Mark Newgent and yours truly, we got into it a few times a year or so ago over a couple of things I wrote, one or two of which questioned something he’d written. Again, big deal. Two guys with two different viewpoints over one or two issues. They were such big and important issues, I can’t even recall now what the Hell they dealt with.
As concerns Larry Hogan, he’s the governor-elect, and although I tend to like most of his picks (Ken Holt was a stroke of genius), there are a few of which I’m not so fond (David Brinkley as Budget Director, who I’m told voted for 6 of 8 of Governor O’Malley’s budgets, was just a stroke – which is no fun, let me tell you, having had two of them myself.) Regardless, this is his Administration and I’m willing to give him some time to see how things pan out– it’s all on his back starting at noon on January 21st, 2015…less than a week away.
As concerns Mark Newgent and his time with Red Maryland – an “organization” with whom I’ve had less than friendly relations – all I can say is that Newgent was never the reason for things between the “Reds” and me going south. That is all on Li’l Guy and Kin Greg Kline – the remaining brainless egos behind Red Maryland. I’d wondered how long Mark Newgent planned on slumming around with them, anyway…
(Red Maryland Gets a Glimpse of it Post-Newgent Future, because now there’s NO REASON to pay them any mind.)
Mark Newgent is a very good writer and, by all accounts, an excellent researcher to boot. Had Larry Hogan plucked either Kim Greg Kline or Li’l Guy for an appointment to his top tier, this would be quite a different piece I’d be writing right now, but his didn’t. He picked the one Red Maryland alum that I feel no ill will knowing some of my tax dollars are going to pay his salary.
Although I can’t call Mark and me and friends, I will say this: Every time we see one another, be it at the last MDGOP convention or at a party at a mutual friend’s place, we’ve always been cordial, if not downright friendly with one another.
As stated earlier, I like Mark Newgent. It’s Red Maryland’s “brain trust” I can’t stand. As I also stated earlier, Mark is a very good writer and an excellent researcher, both skills of which will do the Hogan Administration good. He doesn’t need me – or anyone – to defend his appointment, but considering some of what I, and others, had been hearing…
I don’t blame Larry Hogan in the least for not wanting to associate with Red Maryland any longer. Nor do I blame Mark Newgent for leaving Red Maryland last month – probably to take this job to which he’s just been appointed.
That being said, this was a good move on Hogan’s part. And, it doesn’t hurt Mark Newgent, either.
