Yeah, yeah, yeah…I know. Right now, most everyone loves Maryland’s GOP Governor, Larry Hogan – what with him cutting the toll rates to go over this and that bridge and what not, effective July 1st.
In fact, I heard one report that if you have one of those EZ Pass Tracking Devices hooked to your car, you will only pay $2.50 to go over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge which, the report stated, was the same amount paid in 1975. Hooray! Of course, the toll is $4.00 (Down from $6.00) to cross the Bay Bridge if you don’t have one of those tracking devices. See how much it’s worth it to the state to know where you are at all times? At least $1.50 over the bridge. As for me, I won’t be getting one of those tracking devices.
And, in the best Clintonian manner of doing things, right after Larry Hogan reduced the tolls, I started hearing about how he then went out and gave state employees a taxpayer funded COLA increase. Nice. Of course, the COLA increase didn’t get nearly the amount of media as did the toll reductions – but, what the Hell? That was a part of the plan all along now, wasn’t it?
But, this piece is not a piece designed to trash Larry Hogan, not in the least. In fact, this piece is designed to give him a forum, right here on Darkness Revisited, to explain one little thing he did during the Baltimore Riots of a few weeks ago – a little thing that’s got certain segment of the populace abuzz. Last Monday, a week ago today, I sent him the following email at his “contact the Governor” application on his Official State website
“Why did you (Governor Hogan) effectively suspend Habeas Corpus during the rioting in Baltimore that began last Monday?”
Habeas Corpus, for those of you who don’t know, is an (The) avenue in law in which a person can report an unlawful detention or imprisonment before a court. The Governor moved the required time frame from 24 hours to 47 hours. And, let us not forget that Habeas Corpus has long been enjoyed as the safeguard of the liberty of the subject. My point being, if anyone is going to take a person’s liberty from them without charging them with a crime for AN ADDITIONAL 23 hours, I just wanted to know why that was the case.
Below, in full is Hogan’s response to that question:
Was it a blunder on Governor Hogan’s part? I don’t know – and now, with his non-response, neither do you. The only reason to date I’ve heard about why he suspended Habeas Corpus is because Baltimore’s renowned brain-dead Mayor, Stephanie Rawlings Blake, is said to have asked him to do so.
I guess it’s true, that old adage, that the more things change, the more they stay the same – at least it is in this case, where you have a GOP Governor who is said to have responded in such a “give her whatever the Hell she wants” manner to a truly idiotic Democrat Mayor.
That’s a shame.
