You know, it wasn’t the fact that Maryland GOP Governor, Larry Hogan, and his group, Change Maryland, had been touting the fact that MD had NO Tax Increases this most recent session as an accomplishment that tipped me. You don’t raise taxes – and consider THAT an accomplishment? Seriously?
What sent me over the edge of being tipped, as in what made me hit my tipping point, was this (which is lifted verbatim from the Governor’s Facebook page):
“The Hogan administration today announced that Maryland vehicle owners can now test vehicle emissions using a new, convenient self-service Vehicle Emission Inspection Program (VEIP) kiosk…
‘My administration is committed to making state government and its services more efficient and more responsive,’ Governor Hogan said. ‘Today’s announcement demonstrates how we are expanding available technology to bring the residents of Maryland a faster, more convenient way to do business and help protect the environment—a win-win for all.'”
(Bend Over, Here it Comes…Still and Again.)
How dare Governor Hogan call this, him succumbing to the VEIP-ists amongst us, a “win-win for all.” I’ve always considered vehicle emissions inspections to be a blatant infringement on the time and wallets of every car owning Marylander – and that includes you…well, it does if you’re a car owning Marylander.
And, OK, maybe the State of Maryland making things a bit more “convenient” as concerns the VEIP testing will be a little bit less of an infringement upon your time, but it won’t change much of anything as to it being an infringement on your wallet. This isn’t a “win-win for all.” It’s a “no-win” for the taxpayers.
And, it sent me over my own, personal, tipping point. Not that THAT means too much…
Now please, don’t let Larry Hogan’s smooth and easy, good old boy attempts at charm trick and fool you. He’s become one of THEM – an Annapolis insider. And, if this “making VEIP more convenient thing” doesn’t tell you that loudly and clearly, well then I guess nothing will.
Doing away with VEIP is a no-brainer. “Executive Order” it out of existence, if necessary. But, when you have no brains (at least in this instance), no brainers may as well take the mind of an Einstein to figure out and get through.
I remember well when VEIP was first discussed 20 some years ago. Every GOP elected official in the state stood in strong opposition to it. They ridiculed it. Shredded the very idea of it. They Openly mocked it – as well they should have.
How absolutely disheartening it is that here and now, a mere 20-25 years later, we have a Republican holding the highest elective office in the State of Maryland and, rather than do away – or even try to do away – with VEIP, all he can do is send out press releases congratulating Maryland for making this abomination more “convenient.”
It’s akin to congratulating the rapist for bringing lubricant.
