You know, as far as “celebrities” go, there are very few that I love and very few that I loathe. But, on the loathing end, there are even fewer (if any) I loathe more than I loathe Kanye West. What a bum. What a blowhard. What an arrogant prick.
So, when I heard last night that MDGOP 3rd Vice Chair and Baltimore City Central Committee Member (and my friend) Eugene Craig started the Ready for Kanye PAC by filing paperwork with the Federal Election Committee to raise money for West’s stated 2020 Presidential aspirations (stated at the Video Music Awards a night or two previously) my reaction was:
I loved it. Yes, despite my general lust for Taylor Swift and West’s boorish actions towards her a number of years ago, I loved what Eugene Craig did by starting up his Ready for Kanye Political Action Committee.
And, surprisingly, reaction is mixed. Although I’d initially expected an avalanche of anti-Eugene Craig sentiment, that has not entirely been the case. Apparently, a good number of folks agree with my take on loving this. But, still, certain other folks are in an uproar – An uproar to the point where a few of them have asked him – or, even more laughably – simply expected Eugene to resign from one or both of his MDGOP offices. Apparently, as well, some of the latter folks have either A) No sense of humor and/or B) No idea what it is that Eugene Craig is trying to do (has done) here.
Anyway, I spoke with Eugene earlier today for 15-20 minutes and, in between me laughing and telling him how downright brilliant I though what he did is, I did ask him if he was going to give in and resign. He replied very bluntly, “No. I’m not resigning.” After congratulating him for sticking to his guns – I mean, seriously, he wouldn’t be protecting anyone by resigning – we talked a bit about certain efforts that were underway to remove him from his two positions (His 3rd Vice Chairmanship and his seat on the Central Committee). So, the only people at present, as far as I can tell, who are adamantly opposed to Eugene’s actions are MDGOP hierarchy. Nice.
As concerns his 3rd Vice Chairmanship, I have no idea if and how they can remove him. As concerns the latter, there is something in the Baltimore County GOP bylaws that state you can be removed if you support anyone other than a Republican IF OTHER REPUBLICANS are on the ballot. Considering that Kanye West expressed an interest – and no one has any idea if he was serious or not, anyway – in running in 2020 no one is even on the damned ballot for 2020 yet. So, yeah, Baltimore County GOP Central Committee, good luck with removing him – if you try.
And, even if Baltimore County makes a serious effort to remove Eugene from his position, well, I hope they are prepared to remove someone else, as well…as I’ve heard they’ve been talking about doing for the past 6-12 months.
Anyway, my favorite Eugene Craig quote in this whole Ready for Kanye effort was found in the piece Rolling Stone Magazine did on him, in which Eugene said:
“A party that can openly accept Donald Trump has room for Kanye West.”
Bingo. Although I know a good number of you will disagree with me here, including more than likely the man of the hour, Mr. Craig, I view West and Trump as two sides of the same coin: Each of them are Interloping blowhards of the highest order.
(Photo Courtesy of The Wrap: Hey, I might be a blowhard, but at least I know I am.)
Speaking of Donald Trump, my lovely friend and fellow lover of java, Lonnie Ropp, said “Well, it got that other candidate out of the news. Thank you, Eugene Craig, for starting a conversation. Who knows? Kanye might find out that he is really a Republican.”
To my way of thinking, what Eugene Craig has done here is a piece of brilliant asymmetrical warfare in the old “You need to destroy the village (of the GOP) in order to save it: The two blowhards, Trump and West are now inextricably linked (which was just a pleasant side effect to my way of thinking); He knocked Trump out of the headlines; and he opened up the GOP’s minority outreach in ways that were previously unimaginable.
Finally, and to me personally, this is the big one. In the old days, you’d have people saying things like “Eugene Craig is off the reservation.” No, he isn’t. What Eugene Craig has done is he has eradicated the very idea of there even being a reservation. By starting “Ready for Kanye,” he has made it abundantly clear that the reservation no longer exists.
And, I can’t imagine Taylor Swift cares in the least. And, that’s good enough for me. 😉
