Yesterday, I wrote a piece which asked the question: What the Hell is going on here?
Well, that was a part of the overall resulting question I asked when asking: Did Ben Carson endorse Charles Lollar for Governor in the MD GOP Primary?
That piece can be found here : https://darknessrevisited.wordpress.com/2014/04/14/did-ben-carson-endorse-charles-lollar-or-not/
That piece became my most widely read piece in about 2 weeks (Thank you, Dubai!), but it also, of course, brought out a couple of idiots. Ah, what can you do?
The thing to remember, I think, is that SOOOOO many people wholly do sincerely and seriously believe that Ben Carson did endorse Charles Lollar, but…
…although I still don’t really believe Carson formally endorsed Lollar, I watched a video that was submitted to this blog by one of its most valued commenters, JWB. (Thank you!) In the video, which was shot last year at some Lollar shindig, Carson spoke, and at approximately the 1:34 mark said:
“I’m confident that Charles Lollar is the right person to do that.” – Ben Carson, after talking about needing to clean up some of MD’s problems. Then, for the bulk of the rest of the video, Carson went on to discuss America’s problems and himself for the rest of his time behind the podium. This video can be found in the comments section of the blog at the above link.
Now, although I don’t doubt that Ben Carson likes Charles Lollar – you don’t throw the guy $4,000.00 if you don’t like him – I don’t think that what he said last year qualified as a full-fledged endorsement – like THIS does (from a statement I read today that was released by US. – and Maryland’s only GOP – Congressman Andy Harris concerning Frederick State Senate Candidate, Michael Hough:
“Having served in the State Senate, I know how important it is to have conservatives who will stand up against the liberal majority in Annapolis. I fully endorse Michael Hough for State Senate because I know he will fight for lower taxes, never vote for a tax increase and oppose wasteful government spending.”
(Does it REALLY matter? Does it? Really?
“I’m confident” versus “I fully endorse.”
Could it be just a matter of semantics? I was willing to let it all go at that point, and with my little mind pondering that question – until I got an email message from a friend of mine from Frederick, Fred Propheter.
Fred tells me that he was at the Weinberg Center the night of Ben Carson’s speech there and that he and Carson had a chance meeting before the Doctor’s speech. At this – Oh, Hell, I’ll let Fred explain what transpired after he bumped into Doctor Carson and struck up a brief conversation with him: “I specifically asked him if he had endorsed Lollar or ANY other candidate. 3 word answer “No, absolutely not.” Then he was gone….”
…Then he was gone.
Hmmm. Well, if nothing else, if Carson’s now saying that he didn’t endorse Charles Lollar, it sounds like either 1) He never did endorse Lollar (and I can’t find that word anywhere attached to Lollar from Carson), or if he did – or even thinks other folks may believe that he did – it sounds to me as if he is now walking that endorsement back.
Well, on this fine night in which Larry Hogan was at The Harp in Baltimore County, likely refusing to answer questions concerning the role of government, I’ve got to ask:
What do you think? Do you think Ben Carson endorsed Charles Lollar? At this point…
“No, absolutely not.”
You obviously know more about these things that I do, but the whole event was a Draft fundraiser, not just a general event. I don’t know if that makes a difference.
It strikes me as a little absurd to say that at that kinda event and not call it an endorsement.
Oh yeah, “Most valued”? Thanks. 🙂 Can I call that an endorsement? 😉
